Contrary to what people often think, therapy is not for “crazy” people. It is for people. People who feel that there is something standing between where they are now and where they would like to be in terms of overall wellness. I provide individual therapy to adolescents and adults regarding grief and loss, managing stress and anger, coping with transition (such as divorce, the end of a relationship, beginning of college, etc.), moving beyond past trauma experiences and a host of other concerns. In therapy, the beliefs, values, priorities, strengths, and goals of the client are respected and incorporated into their overall wellness plan.
During initial sessions, I will explain various types of treatment that have been shown to be beneficial for your particular mental health concern and you will be able to make an informed decision about how you would like to move forward. From time to time, we will revisit that decision to assure that your needs are being met. Ultimately, the direction of the work and the methods used are chosen by the client in collaboration with me and it is typically the client who decides the duration and frequency of sessions.
I believe that therapy should be a safe place for clients, where what you think and say is held confidential. This is my approach with both adults and adolescents, which can be a departure from what parents have experienced in other treatment settings. [The exceptions to confidentiality regarding dangerousness to oneself or others and mandated child abuse reporting are obviously explained to clients and utilized if or when such a situation is encountered.]
